Hazel Bothwell Memorial Scholarships and Grants

The Hazel Bothwell Memorial Fund was established by the Illinois Teachers of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing in memory of Hazel Bothwell. A persistent and strong supporter of the education of those with hearing loss in Illinois, Hazel Bothwell inspired countless parents, teachers, and legislators toward positive action to strengthen all phases of educational services to young people. It is the endeavor of the ITDHH Board to carry forward the spirit of Hazel Bothwell by awarding scholarships and grants to certified teachers or professionals serving deaf and hard of hearing individuals, as well as to students in teacher training programs pursuing a degree in the Deaf/Hard of Hearing sequence. Grants may be used for purposes of formal or informal research as well as classroom/school activities.

Program Goals: To advance the expertise of trained teachers of children who are deaf of hard of hearing; to improve the quality and availability of services to children with hearing loss; to support improved services from infancy through secondary levels; and to encourage research with specific application to the education of children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Jacki Marcus Memorial Student Scholarships

In 1992, the ITDHH Executive Board established a student scholarship fund to recognize deaf and hard of hearing high school seniors who wish to continue their education in a college, pre-college, or vocational program.  In 2009, the scholarship was renamed in memory of Jacki Marcus, who served deaf and hard of hearing students in Illinois in many capacities throughout her career, and was a long-standing board member of ITDHH.  Jacki was instrumental in the development and continuation of this scholarship, and her legacy of advocating and supporting deaf and hard of hearing students in Illinois will continue.  The scholarships are based on the motivation and future plans of the students. These monetary awards may be used for tuition, room and board, or classroom materials. The donations and memorials received determine the quantity and size of scholarships awarded.

The Jackie Marcus Student Scholarship is intended for high school seniors in Illinois who are deaf/hard of hearing and are planning to pursue education at a 2 or 4 year college.  The Pierce-Sherer Student Scholarship is intended for high school seniors in Illinois who are deaf/hard of hearing and are planning to pursue training/education at a vocational or trade school.  The application is the same.  It will ask you which scholarship you want to apply for.  I have also attached the link for letters of recommendation. Finally, the rubric used for scoring is attached so the students may reference that while preparing their materials.

Please encourage high school DHH seniors to apply for this scholarship!
